Pen Park is Charlottesville's largest city park at 280 acres, located off East Rio Road on Pen Park Road. The land has retained its name for over 200 years, and the City of Charlottesville acquired the final parcels by 1979 to create what locals call the 'gem' of the city park system. The park's name is so significant that Park Street in Charlottesville takes its name from this historic green space. With frontage along the Rivanna River and diverse recreational facilities, Pen Park serves as a central gathering place for outdoor recreation, family activities, and community events across the region.
“The combination of fitness stations and riverside trails makes this my favorite workout spot. It's peaceful, well-maintained, and I love bringing my dog along. The natural setting makes exercise feel less like work and more like an adventure.”
“I've been using these trails for morning runs for years. The variety keeps it interesting—some days I focus on the fitness stations, other days I just enjoy the river trail. Being Charlottesville's largest park really shows in the quality and space.”
“Perfect for all fitness levels. I started as a beginner just walking the trails, and gradually incorporated the fitness stations. The river views are beautiful year-round, and the free access means I can come as often as I want.”
